Playing Favorites - The We-Wu for November 4-15, 2024
As much as I love my website, I must admit, it does take a bit more work to post things now.
Oh well.
Sorry I didn’t post last week. I was out of the office on doggie and deputation duty. The dog was adorable, and the deputation was somewhat productive.
I actually spent a fair amount of time organizing myself for the rest of the year. There are a lot of important dates and travel plans and things to remember, so I try to put a concerted effort into making lists and setting deadlines so that I’m not caught off guard by things I haven’t done or thought of. I do inevitably forget some things, but for the most part, I actually do fairly well. It allows me to enjoy my holidays without being majorly stressed.
Should I apply such strategies to the rest of my year? Yes. Do I? I think we all know the answer to that.
Last week, while I was in the office, I was working on server updates. No, not the code. I took a coding class in college as my math credit, and I did actually enjoy it, but I am in no way qualified to write software code. I can mostly understand the low-level jokes about it, and that’s all I need. But I can put stuff on a server, and I finally managed to get all of our Train & Multiply languages and booklets up on to TWO servers. Go me! Now I just have to maintain this with new languages and booklets. There’s a reason I have a bajillion post-it notes on my desk. Every so often, I take inventory of them and toss the ones I’ve completed. The rest get re-sorted by priority and added to until I go on another cleaning jag.
We also had a new CROSS-training group at HQ last week. That meant I got to do one of my favorite exercises - the four culture game! I had the rigid, martial group again (probably because I love it so much). This time, they leaned into the martial aspect of things, and I just happened to have a katana, a kukri, and a cape for them to use. Weird.
The culture game, of course, is designed to get people out of their comfort zones by experiencing a little bit of culture shock in a controlled environment. We tend to play it up to make things a little more silly, but it really is a consideration in missions. Think of the number of cultures just in the U.S. I can definitely recall some cities I’ve felt uncomfortable about wandering around in. And that’s when I know the language!
This week, I’m up to my elbows in fonts. For some reason, I can’t find the correct font we’re using in our new African languages. It’s driving me nuts. I have downloaded, replaced, and probably invented a few new fonts in the process. I don’t understand it.
When I needed a break, I worked on some tech guidelines for a conference next year, wrote a fact sheet for our development team about T&M, and watched some cyber security videos on mute. Why mute? Because I was also listening to a podcast. Am I ruining my brain? Likely. But I will die on the hill of multi-tasking.
Also, the last two videos have been on sextortion scams. Great. (Seriously, don’t send naughty photos on the internet. Or a phone. It’s super dumb.)
I think that’s about it for the last two weeks. Although, I was informed that I am Jesus’ favorite. So that’s pretty cool. (I don’t know, either. But when told this, my immediate response was “Obviously,” and everyone agreed.)
Sweat some small stuff this weekend, friends! Bye.
